Artist: Bellowhead
Album: Matachin
Year: 2008
CD#: 47585
Not-so-Local?: From England
Canadian? No
Best Tracks: #1, #6, #8, #9, #10, #12
Comments Overall: A large ensemble with diverse influences (Celtic, Eastern European, ect...) which isn't really dominated by any one member or even type of instrument - accordian, tuba, trumpet, claranet, violin, etc... Excellent orchestrations throughout.
1. Fakenham Fair, 5:00 - Gipsey-esque piece, lively, full-bodied.
2. Roll Her Down the Bay, 3:27 - Sailor's shanty, bizzare rhythym, feels like a bar song.
3. Vignette I, 0:41 - Short, pleasant interlude.
4. I Drew My Ship Across the Harbour, 4:15 - Slow, longing, but still energetic.
5. Kafoozalum / The Priest's Miss, 5:31 - Slightly irreverant feel, principally instrumental.
6. Cholera Camp, 6:08 - Starts and ends slow, picks up for brief periods midway, slightly sarcastic description of a cholera epidemic in the army.
7. Vignette II, 0:45 - Slow beginning for track #8
8. Whiskey is the Life of Man, 3:22 - Abrupt beginning (unless matched with #7), energetic, call-and-response tribute to booze.
9. Spectre Review, 5:23 - Begins with trumpet call, bizzare tale of a corpse army marching on parade, brilliantly orchestrated.
10. Widow's Curse, 5:33 - Pulsing, rhythmic, slightly surrealistic tale.
11. Bruton Town, 5:34 - Very similar to the proceeding track, but without the surrealistic edge either in the lyrics or the music.
12. Trip to Bucharest / The Flight of the Folk Mutants Parts 1 & 2, 5:34 - Constant, moving rhythym, increasingly energetic, ends with brass.
13. Vignette III, 0:49 - Short music box ditty.
Note I: The liner notes for each track are definently worth reading. They usually give you something intruiging to say on the air, if nothing else.
Note II: I've also slotted copies of this under "World".
